Company Timeline

Smartpay evolved over the years as a leader in the NZ payments space and proudly joined the Shift4 family

Fonefill Limited Established

2004

Smartpay was established in Auckland, New Zealand as Fonefill Limited to distribute top-up vouchers for pre-paid mobile phones. It quickly expanded into electronic bill payment services, international calling cards, prepaid cards, and plans including internet solutions & EFPTOS systems.

Smartpay Established

February 2005

Fonefill Limited was rebranded to Smartpay to better reflect the company direction and target markets. Cube acquired 100% of Fonefill Limited and was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX).

ProvencoCadmus Acquired

August 2009

Smartpay announced the purchase of the payments division of collapsed ProvencoCadmus.

Viaduct Acquired

January 2013

Smartpay announced the purchase of Viaduct (which was established in 2001).

Listed on the ASX

September 2013

Smartpay Holdings Limited (SMP) floated in the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and became a dual-listed company with the NZX.

First Acquiring Transaction

November 2018

Smartpay launched its own acquiring solution to the Australian market with a strong focus on customer experience for small and medium-sized businesses.

Technology Holdings Limited (THL) Acquired

October 2024

Smartpay acquired Technology Holdings Limited to increase its regional presence and reach across the New Zealand payments market.

First NZ Acquiring Transaction

June 2025

Smartpay launched its own acquiring solution to the New Zealand market, replicating the same focus as the Australian market on customer experience for small and medium-sized businesses.

Shift4 Acquires Smartpay

November 2025

Shift4 (NYSE: FOUR), a global leader in point-of-sale and payments technology, purchases Smartpay, and Smartpay is removed from the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX).

Shift4 Goes Live

February 2026

Smartpay is rebranded to the Shift4 name, starting a new chapter for its New Zealand and Australian merchants. This change sees the same great local service, all powered with more global payment solutions.
